Russian Space Systems Developing Space-based Solar Power Satellite

MOSCOW (Rosatom PR) — The Russian Space Systems holding (part of the Roscosmos State Corporation) has developed a project for a promising solar space power plant (SCES). It is designed to supply power to hard-to-reach – island, mountainous and northern – regions of the Earth, as well as for scheduled and emergency recharging of spacecraft.

How does a space solar station differ from those familiar to everyone on the ground? In the Earth’s atmosphere, the sun’s rays are scattered and partially lose their energy efficiency. In outer space, the efficiency of using solar energy is ten times higher. RCS scientists proposed to convert it into a laser beam and transmit it to Earth with minimal energy loss.

Roscosmos, Rosatom, Rostelecom and Gazprom Neft will develop the Russian IT solutions market

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (Roscosmos PR) — At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Roscosmos State Corporation, Rosatom State Corporation, Rostelecom and Gazprom Neft approved a memorandum of cooperation in order to create an Association of the largest consumers of software and equipment. The document was signed by Dmitry Rogozin, Director General of Roscosmos State Corporation, Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom State Corporation, Mikhail Oseevsky, President of Rostelecom, and Alexander Dyukov, Chairman of the Gazprom Neft Management Board. Cooperation of the largest technology companies from various industries is aimed at developing the Russian IT solutions market.

The Association will unite the efforts of partners in interaction with government regulators, software developers and equipment suppliers. In addition, the participants will work on the formation of requirements for software and technologies, help manufacturers to improve products and increase their competitiveness.


Roscosmos Approves Space Instrumentation Industry Transformation Program

MOSCOW (Roscosmos PR) — Roscosmos Supervisory Board approved the program of strategic transformations of space instrument-making enterprises and decided to form space instrument-making holding based on the Russian Space Systems company (RSS, part of Roscosmos). Being at the national economy level these decisions determine the future image of one of the most important components the Russian rocket and space industry and are aimed at maintaining and progressive development of the scientific, technological, production and innovative potential of space instrument-making enterprises.

Rogozin Lays Out 10 Principles to Guide Roscosmos

MOSCOW (Roscosmos PR) — Today, June 28, 2018, Moscow hosted the scientific and practical conference “The main tasks and prospects for the development of Roscosmos”, at which the General Director of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin announced ten principles on which the State Corporation and enterprises of the industry will operate.

At the event, not only the heads of Roscosmos, but also all the enterprises of the industry gathered, there were altogether more than 250 people. The moderator of the conference was acting. Nikolay Sevastyanov, First Deputy General Director of Roscosmos State Corporation, who outlined the program of the meeting.

Opening speech delivered by Dmitry Rogozin, at the very beginning of which he cited Academician Andrei Sakharov: “Life is an expansion.” He also stressed that the Russian cosmos is the crown of self-identification of our people.


Russian Nuclear Agency Explores How to Prevent Armageddon

Tass reports that Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, is exploring ways to blow up asteroids before they blow us up.

“Our study is only a part of the quest to create an asteroid protection system. The priorities here are detection, classification and high-precision monitoring of a celestial body. After that, a bomb should be designed, which would be safe enough during the launch. A carrier rocket will have to be designed, too,” said Vladimir Rogachev, the deputy head of the laser physics institute at the Russian Federal Nuclear Center (VNIIEF), part of the Rosatom corporation.

“This is an international task of impressive scope. We have something to offer. But there are also things that we need to borrow,” he went on.

“Regretfully, international politics and the current state of international relations necessitate a different format of communications, so we have to wait. But we should not procrastinate: when a dangerous asteroid approaches the Earth, it will be too late,” the researcher added.

Rogachev said that VNIIEF scientists have “baked” an artificial chondrite, the most popular type of asteroids, to study its qualities. According to their calculations, if a 200-meter asteroid approaches the Earth, a rocket should be launched approximately a month before the planned impact, to smash the celestial body into small parts that would burn upon entering the atmosphere.

“Yes, some parts will reach the surface of the planet, but, due to their small size, there will be no apocalypse,” he said. “This technology would be sufficient to destroy an object similar to the Tunguska meteor.”
