KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla., October 5, 2016 (CASIS PR) — The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), today announced a funding opportunity focused on human physiology and disease onboard the International Space Station (ISS) U.S. National Laboratory. Data from this research — which will feature “tissue chips” (or “organs-on-chips”) — will help scientists develop and advance novel technologies to improve human health. This announcement is part of a four-year collaboration through which NCATS will provide up to $12 million in funding to use tissue chip technology for translational research onboard the ISS National Laboratory for the benefit of human health on Earth.
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla., October 4, 2016 (CASIS PR) – The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) announced today that Dr. Randy Giles, a world-renowned scientist, thought leader in optical technologies, and elected member of the US National Academy of Engineering, has joined CASIS as chief scientist.
In this role, Dr. Giles will lead the scientific research and technology development for the International Space Station U.S. National Laboratory. Dr. Giles has spent the past three decades at Bell Labs, where he has led global research and development teams with technologies ranging from medical diagnostics to quantum physics, microelectromechanical systems, and advanced optical networking.
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla., September 29, 2016 (CASIS PR) – The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) today announced five projects have been awarded from a joint fluid dynamics solicitation for focused research onboard the International Space Station (ISS) U.S. National Laboratory for Earth benefits. Through this partnership, CASIS and NASA will facilitate hardware implementation and on-orbit access to the ISS National Laboratory. NSF will award $1.5 million total in funding for the selected projects to advance fundamental science and engineering knowledge through microgravity inquiry.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., August 9, 2016 (SST-US PR)— Seeking to expand the satellite launching capabilities of the International Space Station, Colorado-based Surrey Satellite Technology US LLC (SST-US) has signed a contract with NanoRacks LLC for future flights of a 100-kilogram-class satellite platform specifically developed by SST-US for deployment from the International Space Station (ISS) using the NanoRacks Kaber deployment system.

HOUSTON (NASA PR) — Anyone who has been sick before knows you want relief as quickly as possible. An investigation soon taking place aboard the International Space Station could help bring that relief by improving design of tablets used to deliver medicine into the human body. The Hard to Wet Surfaces research looks at liquid-solid interactions and how certain pharmaceuticals dissolve, which may lead to more potent and effective medicines in space and on Earth.
HOUSTON (NASA PR) — Protein crystals tend to grow larger and more perfectly in space than on Earth, where gravity and other forces interfere. For scientists studying protein crystal structures, the difference is like watching high-definition television on a large screen versus standard-definition on a tiny screen.
“If you’re watching a hockey game on a small screen at low resolution, you can see the players and hockey sticks and maybe, just maybe, the puck moving around,” said Kristofer Gonzalez-DeWhitt, a scientist at Eli Lilly and Company. “But in high resolution on a large screen, you can see sweat on a player’s face.”

GLASGOW, Scotland (Clyde Space PR) — Clyde Space, Scotland’s leading-edge space technology company, is to provide the satellites for a new pilot programme offering quick, regular and more affordable access to space.
The Glasgow-based company announced today it has been commissioned by the Satellite Applications Catapult and Innovate UK to build four CubeSats for the £1.5 million project.
The satellites will eventually be launched from the International Space Station (ISS) in an ‘in-orbit demonstration’ (IOD) of technical and business propositions that have a high projected return on investment. The Launch opportunities from the ISS are provided by NanoRacks, via its Space Act Agreement with NASA’s U.S. National Lab.
EXPLORATION PARK, Fla. Recently, CASIS commissioned a study to evaluate the specific capabilities and limitations of the ISS as a host for commercial remote sensing payloads.
