Camden County has partnered with an investment group to push forward plans for a spaceport on the Georgia coast as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) weighs whether to approve the controversial project.
“The public/private partnership between Organic Code Development, LLC and Camden County will allow Spaceport Camden to become a fully integrated Space and Research center that incorporates rocket launch capabilities and a technology and research business park. It will attract big data analytic researchers, aerospace manufacturing, professional services, and deep space communications experts,” Camden County said in a press release.
“The interdisciplinary technology center will offer collaborative research opportunities in artificial intelligence, aerospace, defense, engineering, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, software development, information technology robotics, and cyber security,” the statement added.
Whether the FAA will issue a spaceport license for the site remains unclear. The agency has raised a number of safety concerns about the planned facility, which would see launch vehicles fly over the Cumberland islands.
A group of homeowners with property on the islands has waged a campaign against the proposed spaceport on safety grounds.
The FAA was to have rendered a decision on the spaceport’s license application in December. Camden County had sought approval for a dozen medium or large rocket launches per year with an equal number of first-stage landings.
Days before the FAA was due to render its verdict, the county modified its application to seek approval to launch small boosters only with no first-stage landings. The FAA is still reviewing the modified application.

The fiber and power network already available at Spaceport Camden will be capable of supporting high performance compute or network operating centers. Spaceport Camden will serve as the anchor for the proposed development, attracting orbital launch providers and offering aerospace assembly/staging facilities and propulsion testing.

As a next step, Camden County and Organic Code Development, LLC will enter into a Memorandum of Understanding to outline the parameters of the public private partnership and finalize the due diligence necessary to complete the transaction.
