Space Cooperative Launches Social Network for Citizen-Led Blockchain Space Agency

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 8, 2018 (Space Cooperative PR) — Space Cooperative, an international worker-cooperative focused on space expansion, has launched Space Decentral ( a social network for space and the first mission control center of a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) powered by blockchain technology. Space Decentral will propel the vision of a spacefaring civilization into action and enable participants to crowdsource, crowdfund, and implement the next generation of citizen-driven space initiatives. The organization has released a brief of its white paper with today’s announcement.

Space Decentral aims to expand and democratize permanent human presence in space, making participation in space expansion more accessible to all citizens of our planet, by utilizing decentralized governance tools for collective decision making.

“We all need to take the long view and work together to create the system that sustainably makes humans a true spacefaring species,” said Dr. Marc M. Cohen, co-owner of Space Cooperative and former NASA Ames engineer. “We may not complete the effort in our lifetime, but we have an obligation to humanity, to begin.”

Yalda Mousavinia, Space Cooperative co-founder, and Cohen were both inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s world view that everyone on Earth should be encouraged to act as a harmonious crew working toward the greater good.

“Space technology and Earth technology go hand in hand–we need to utilize systems thinking to solve problems in parallel,” said Mousavinia. “We should be united to confront the challenges of outer space and discover synergetic solutions.”

Prior to co-founding Space Cooperative, Mousavinia was a Senior Product Manager at Oracle, where she designed solutions for their Enterprise Resource Planning software suite.

“This is a massive project that will require the presence of hundreds of scientists, engineers and innovators,” said Space Cooperative’s advisor Dr. Paolo Tasca, Executive Director of the Centre for Blockchain Technologies at University College London (UCL). “It’s a global space research lab where individuals and organizations can contribute knowledge and pool intellectual property in an open manner, and where revenue can be fairly shared among contributors.”

Space Decentral will include an open source toolbox with social tools for collaboration. The roadmap will leverage vast open source development work in the Ethereum ecosystem, including integrations between decentralized applications as needed.

Governance and operations will be mediated by smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain. An initial coin offering for a Faster Than Light (FTL) token will be launched later this year to fund the development of blockchain technology to facilitate decentralized space missions and distributed engineering.

About Space Cooperative: Space Cooperative is a worker-owned cooperative focused on space expansion, crewed by a diverse global team that includes engineers, architects, futurists, artists, and software developers. The Cooperative promotes global collaboration for humankind to become a spacefaring civilization, leveraging recent developments in blockchain technology to create a decentralized space program.

And so the blockchaib fad has now made it into space… With the crackdown on all the cyprocurrencies by regulators and restrictions by banks it is hard to see how this is viable. It’s just one fad trying to piggyback on another fad.

And outside of crypto currencies, the whole concept of “block chain” does not appear to be profitable.

It may be “cool”, have admirable political goals and such, but I have yet to see a viable business model that shows how profit is made.

Yes, just like the old bomb – its so cool folks just trust profit will follow if you you believe and click your Ruby Slippers together 🙂
