Happy New Year!

2017 is finally over. Let’s hope 2018 is a better one.

My best wishes to all of you in the new year.

  • Robert G. Oler

it will be a great year…might put some predictions here latter today happy new year from Istanbul

  • Pat Swayne

still 2017 in the US at this time (10:30 PM Eastern). Where are you?

  • WhoAmI

Happy New Year Doug and to all parabolic arc readers! Hoping for a great year full of space milestones.

  • ThomasLMatula

    Happy New Year!

  • Douglas Messier

California. But, I’ve got readers all over the world. For some of them it’s already 2018.

  • Aerospike

Happy New Year to you Doug!

And of course also to the regular commenters here on parabolic arc. πŸ™‚

Granted, 2018 is almost certainly going to be better than 2017, especially in terms of space-related matters. But it’s not like 2017 was exactly a bad year. If you don’t agree, I would be interested in knowing what you found lacking about 2017. Perhaps others share my curiosity.

some new years predictions from Istanbul…mostly all space related

SPaceX fan boys CHEER everything…(goes without saying)

1.20 to 25 F9 launches. very unlikely any failures in delivery; there might be some slipups in the first stage recovery…but trivial. FAiring reuse is harder then they think.
2.the FH launch is successful but has a few “things” that show some needed tweaks…its six months until they try it again and all the bugs are gone
    3. the V5 finally appears and with some effort makes it to 3 flights by the end of the year for a core. I am told by a reliable source who does not work for SpaceX but for another agency which does business with them…the limiting factor is the heat of reentry on the engines…
    4. Dragon 2 flies uncrewed, no big issues. they get the first crewed flight off in Dec 2018. It is the modern Christmas surprise.
    5. the lunar “thing” slips on purpose to July 2019. but stays on track. the “travelers” will be announced (some surprises here maybe a 3ish year old European female is included)…and another reservation is announced.
    5. BFR continues to shrink on its path to becoming “the Falcon that really is reusable” Methane upper stage starts to be tested (SpaceX fans cheer even louder)
    6. the cores of the FH have a hard time being recovered and being reused.

SpaceX fan boys cheer everything (goes without saying πŸ™‚

CST 100 flies uncrewed. its a Boeing no issues they make the crew flight in 2019…

Hubble…a modest failure occurs…starts talk and competition for a servicing mission

    1. Surprise everyone by New Glenn progress.
    2. they break the space line with “people” (I call them test pilots but…) probably in the fall say October πŸ™‚

    1. the child who would be administrator continues to twist in the wind for a bit.
    2. SLS keeps slipping to the right; by summer its 2021
    3. Webb slips from 2019 to 2020. there are serious problems announced with the project. this plays into the confirmation of the Administrator (really just a guess here. no inside information but Webb is run by some of the most incompetent people on the planet)
    4. Lunar outpost receives no real support in Congress BUT some ideas in industry start to gain traction.
    5. Space station continues its current path to mediocrity. But more and more a lot of “Plans” start emerging about how to make something useful from it
    6. no real news from Mars…no major discoveries. Insight works
    7. Planet Next comes then goes.
    8. New Horizons surprises us all with what it finds

    1. no new modules to station,
    2. Glonass continues to collapse
    3. the long awaited Soyuz launch failure occurs

    1. the Secretary of the Air Force continues her enlightened, thoughtful and well executed plan to make lift in the US very robust (this is where the methane burner for FalconH comes in), as well as to change completely the satellite constellations of the US military. She is an enormously impressive figure who has enormous support in the DoD with the SecDef and the Congress. Trump has no idea what is going on.

    and this is good because

CHINESE continue their march to become the dominant military power in the Western (their eastern) pacific region as the US worries about the once mighty seventh fleet bumping into other ships and exhaust itself around the world. The Chinese continue becoming the dominant economic power on the planet.

Indians have a good year in space including a lunar lander that surprises (ie it works)

North Koreans continue to tweak the Eagles beak on behalf of the Chinese and Russians…next stop an Amateur radio payload…that works

Iranians…a satellite into orbit…another 2 to 10 meter transponder for amateur radio (yeah)

the smallsat launchers start to fly.

    AMSAT useless.

political. the blue wave gathers…after the election the Dems control both houses (I get to revise this as time goes on πŸ™‚ But the only current leader that survives on either side of the equation is the Senior Senator from NY. everyone else is new afterwards

    Happy New Year

  • Robert Sutton

Well 2017 was certainly lacking in Interplanetary missions with no launches or arrivals.

I still wonder about the French payload

  • Douglas Messier

Save it for another time. Happy new year!

  • jimmycrackcorn

Economy and stock market are up, ISIS got their ass whooped, hell of a lot better year than previous years.
