Tim Pickens Reminisces About SpaceShipOne Flight

Tim Pickens reminisces about the first commercial human spaceflight in 2004 by SpaceShipOne, which was powered by a hybrid engine he designed.

Too bad the hybrid design would not scale sufficiently to allow Virgin to use it in their Spaceship II design. All indications are that they are going with a liquid system, which is what Konrad Dannenberg from the German Rocket team had recommended when he was at the Spaceship 1 historic flight.

Yeah, Dannenberg wasn’t alone in recommending they go with a liquid system. Other key people they should have listened to said the same thing. But, Burt somehow concluded, based on his vast experience with rockets, that the hybrid design they had was both safe and could be easily scaled up, despite warnings to the contrary. And there was no one with sufficient expertise at Virgin Galactic to challenge those assumptions.

The results of those misjudgments were tragic.

    And expensive…
