On Tuesday, Mojave Air and Space Port’s board of directors said goodbye to its president, Jim Balentine, who was defeated for re-election earlier this month. He was elected to the board in 1994.
Balentine will be replaced next month by newcomer Allen L. Peterson, who is president and CEO of the National Test Pilot School at the airport. Peterson will join the board at its next meeting on Dec. 18. The board’s Dec. 4 meeting has been canceled due to scheduling conflicts.
“You’ve been a great leader for the board,” said Mojave General Manager Stu Witt, praising Balentine for his work on many challenging issues.
Airport board and staff members and the audience applauded after Witt finished praising Balentine for his service.
Balentine may well return to the board next year, to fill a position left open by Cathy Hansen, who resigned in October for personal reasons. Although Hansen stayed on the ballot and was re-elected, she will not serve her term.
Balentine, who is popular among his fellow board members, said he would apply for the open position. The board is likely to fill the post in January.
