Seattle, WA, November 1, 2012 (Spaceflight PR) — Spaceflight Inc. (Spaceflight) with its partner Andrews Space (Andrews) recently completed a Preliminary Design Review for the Spaceflight Secondary Payload System (SSPS) to support a launch in early 2013.
Spaceflight is a leading provider of launch services for small and secondary payloads which is under contract to launch over a dozen spacecraft in the next 12 months, on a range of domestic and international launch vehicles. Development of their cornerstone product, the SSPS, is progressing on schedule with hardware fabrication underway on the long-lead items. The SSPS provides a simple turnkey system to simplify small satellite integration with the launch vehicle, Spaceflight has been developing the Spaceflight Secondary Payload System to accommodate and deploy up to 1,500 kg of payloads, of varying mass, volume and dispense orientation, on an intermediate launch vehicle. The SSPS has at its core a Moog CSA ring that is approximately one meter tall and can accommodate over 300 kg on each of its five ports.
Spaceflight, along with Andrews Space, recently completed a successful Preliminary Design Review to verify all SSPS design requirements and review system designs to support a launch in early 2013. With this review complete, Spaceflight is proceeding rapidly towards fabrication of the remaining hardware elements.
“This is a significant milestone in our efforts to expand space access for the growing small satellite market,” said Curt Blake, Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Spaceflight. “Commercial advocacy for the SSPS is tremendous and we’re progressing on schedule to prove this technology in space. Furthermore, SSPS is the technology foundation for our SHERPA in-space tug and this maiden voyage serves as a significant risk reduction milestone in the SHERPA development effort.”
