Flights could be made from spaceport by 2011

Sierra County Commissioner Walter Armijo, a spaceport backer, said the SpaceShipTwo unveiling was a sign of progress in a project he believes will create new jobs. “Virgin Galactic — they’re coming through with their part of the deal,” he said.

Opponents of the spaceport project have said it’s too much of a risky investment and that taxpayer money would have been better spent fixing existing problems in the state.

Dona Ana County Commissioner Oscar Vásquez-Butler was among those opposed to a county sales tax to fund the project. Voters approved the tax in 2007 by a narrow margin. Vásquez-Butler acknowledged that Virgin Galactic’s launch system is becoming reality, but said he remains skeptical.

“When the voters pass a referendum, I have to go with what the voters say, but whether I still have reservations about the benefit to Do-a Ana County,” he said. If “we’ve realized the benefit yet, I haven’t seen it.”
