Garneau Congratulates Thirsk on Record-Setting Flight

Liberal Industry and Science Critic Marc Garneau made the following statement today congratulating Canadian Astronaut Robert Thirsk on a successful mission in space:

“It gives me great pleasure to welcome my friend and colleague Robert Thirsk back to Earth, following a record breaking 189-day mission in space.

“Dr. Thirsk’s mission marked two significant milestones in Canadian history: the longest stay in space for a Canadian, and the first time two Canadians have ever crossed paths in outer space, with the visit of Canadian Astronaut Julie Payette and Canadian space tourist Guy Laliberté to the International Space Station. His combined career total of 206 days in space surpasses the total number of days spent in space by all other Canadian astronauts combined.”

“Robert Thirsk is a modern Canadian explorer. His drive and determination to expand our knowledge about ourselves and our universe makes him an inspiration and role model for all Canadians.

“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I congratulate Dr. Thirsk on pushing the boundaries of what is possible.”
