Andrews Space Completes New Mission Control, Integration Lab

Andrews Space, Inc. (Andrews) announced today the completion of a new integration lab, mission control center, and flat floor to support spacecraft integration and hardware in the loop testing. The new facilities are part of a planned expansion at its Andrews Rapid Prototyping Lab, an 11,000 square foot facility located south of Seattle in Tukwilla, Washington.

The new lab features a 400 square foot flat floor and two five degree of freedom satellite simulators to conduct spacecraft hardware in the loop testing. Andrews has completed hardware demonstrations with its satellite simulators for the United States Air Force and other customers. The two satellite simulators feature state of the art control systems, including four control moment gyroscopes and cold gas attitude control systems.

The mission control facility supports hardware in the loop testing and is capable of supporting future spaceflight missions. In addition to the control center and flat floor, Andrews has also completed a 1,000 square foot hardware integration lab as well as a 400 square foot advanced materials processing lab.

“The facilities are an important part of our capital expansion plans and significantly increase the hardware development and integration capabilities within the company,” said Jason Andrews, President of Andrews Space. “In addition, we are also moving our Valencia, California office into a new facility to support increased demand for our avionics products and components,” continued Andrews.

The satellite test and integration facilities are used to develop hardware in support of Andrews’ existing programs. The facilities are also available for external customers to test their hardware leveraging Andrews’ unique hardware in the loop testing capabilities.

“The satellite simulators are a great asset for testing responsive space platform software and sensors,” explained Andrews. “The flat floor and five degrees of freedom simulators provide a unique capability to cost effectively test approach, rendezvous and proximity flying operations.”

In total, Andrews has facilities in Seattle WA, Valencia CA, and northern Alabama with a total of over 30,000 square feet of engineering, laboratory and integration space.
